Need to have an amazing cake for your next party? Don't fret -- use these great ideas to doctor a store bought cake into a one-of-a-kind vision!

Birthday cakes are the highlight of most youngsters’ birthday parties. If you’re Martha Stewart or the Ace of Cakes, you may be able to create a dream cake for your child’s special day. However, the rest of us can create some pretty spectacular delicacies, just by starting with a store-bought sheet cake or a cake from a mix, and using a little ingenuity to “spice up” the final result! Read on for a bunch of great ideas on creating fun birthday cakes for kids!

  • Baseball Themed Party: purchase a sheet cake and create a baseball diamond on it using homemade or store-bought tube icing. Use plastic baseball players and pennants, which can be purchased at your local grocery store, Party City, or craft store, to give the diamond dimension. Place candles on each base and in the outfield positions.
  • Under the Sea or Little Mermaid Party: purchase a sheet cake and frost it with light blue icing. Make sure to create textured “waves” on the top of the cake, by varying the depth of the frosting. Carefully place store-bought plastic fish and sea creatures in and amongst the frosting waves, making sure to “submerge” some of the marine life!
  • 1950’s or Sock Hop Party: Bake your favorite type of cake from a mix, creating a round layer cake. Ice the cake with very dark brown frosting, and then use neon colored tube icing to simulate a vinyl record. Don’t forget to frost the center of the cake top with white frosting, and create your own personalized “record label” in honor of the party’s host.
  • Movie Theater Birthday Party: Purchase a sheet cake and use old spools of movie film to decorate the perimeter of the cake. You can unwind the film and cascade swirls of it along the cake top. Be careful to keep the candles in the center of the cake and away from the film, as it is flammable.
  • Winter Themed or Snowman Themed Birthday: Prepare a cake mix according to the directions, and bake it in 8 inch and 9 inch pans. After baking, place the two cake circles next to each other (touching) on your cake board. Frost them both with white frosting and decorate to resemble a snowman.
  • Millionaire or Monopoly Themed Birthday: Bake or purchase the birthday host’s favorite type of cake. Decorate the cake top with cellophane-wrapped new coins, tied with festive ribbon. The birthday host gets to keep the money or he/she can share it with the guests.
