Shrek Birthday Party

A Green Ogre Celebration for Kids

Jun 17, 2007 Katelyn Thomas

Create a Shrek themed birthday party that is a big hit with a few of these simply disgusting ideas.

Shrek is very popular with kids and adults. A Shrek birthday party is the perfect event for a birthday party where boys and girls are both invited, since ogres are disgusting enough for any boy and Fiona is a princess. If the thought of throwing a birthday party for a whole horde of little ogres sounds a bit overwhelming, don't worry. It is actually quite easy.Try a few of these ideas for a birthday party that is sure to be a hit.

Snack Food

There are plenty of fun opportunities to re-create the Shrek experience for kids with snacks. A few of our favorite snacks no grown-up wants to sample are:

  • Ear wax and cotton swabs - This disgusting sounding snack is actually a favorite with most kids and adults when it goes by a more traditional name. Cheese dip bears a startling resemblence to Shrek's ear wax. Mini bread sticks or pretzel rods make a great substitute for cotton swabs.
  • Gross pizzas - Let the children make their own pizzas on pita bread rounds. Use green ketchup as pizza sauce and cut bug shapes out of the pepperoni rounds.
  • Slime - Green jello with gummy worms and "anchovies" cut out of fruit rollups mixed in makes a repulsive dessert fit for any Shrek fan.

Activities

  • Have the children come dressed as their favorite Shrek character. While you are sure to have a few Shreks and Fionas in the group, there are other characters, such as Puss and Donkey, that are probably going to make an appearance, too.
  • Bake up a batch of gingerbread men for the kids to decorate. If a few of them break their legs during the baking and cooling process, don't worry. It will just add a touch of authenticity to the gingerbread men.
  • Put together a "who said what" trivia game. There's not much that gets past kids who've watched a movie a dozen times, so expect a lively game.
  • Watching all of the Shrek movies back to back is a bit too much for a birthday party. Unless you plan a sleepover event, don't even try. However, you can play a few favorite scenes or have the movie playing in the background while the kids are playing.
  • Read the original. Shrek was a book by William Steig before it was turned into a movie.
  • Hand out pre-inflated balloons and have the children decorate them to look like toads, snakes and other creepy crawlies.
  • Donkey's dragon didn't get slain, but that doesn't mean your birthday guests can't slay their own papier mache dragon with a wooden sword. A pinata in the shape of a dragon adds a special final touch to the day.

Wrap up the party with favor bags filled with silly slime, slappy frogs and sour gummy worms.
