A few guidelines can help ensure that the party goes smoothly for children and adults alike. Keep elements of the party fairly simple, invite the kids in planning and decorating for the party and create a theme that kids will appreciate.

TECHNIQUE

Making Sailing Party Invitations

Materials:

  • Anchor template
  • Rectangular eraser
  • Fine ballpoint pen
  • Utility knife
  • Sailboat image
  • Colored stock paper and matching envelopes
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Ink pad
  • Red ribbon
  • Small hole punch
  • Brown ribbon

Directions:

  1. Print out the anchor template (see instructions below). Lay the anchor template flat on the eraser and trace the anchor's outline with a fine ballpoint pen. Using a utility knife, carefully cut around the ink outline, shaving away enough of the rubber so that all of the negative space around the anchor is cut away. Test the stamp on a piece of scrap paper, paring away the rubber until the anchor makes the desired imprint.
  2. Print out the sailboat image (see instructions below), and have it photocopied, making sure to copy enough for all the invitations. Cut out the sailboats, making sure the edges are straight. Using a glue stick, spread adhesive on the back of the cutouts, and place them on stock paper cards, which can be purchased with matching envelopes at stationery stores (If desired, draw clouds onto white craft paper, cut out and glue onto the upper left corner of the cards.) Ink the anchor stamp, and print the anchor image on the left side of the card, opposite the sailboat.
  3. Print out the party information on a computer, cut out, and glue onto the invitation to the left of the sailboat and above the anchor. To make flags for the sailboats, cut squares from a length of red ribbon, notch one side of the squares and glue the flags above the sails. Use a small hole punch to make holes: at the top of the anchor where rope would be, and another on the left side of the boat directly below the sails. Push a 3-inch piece of brown ribbon through the top hole of the anchor to make the rope. Push one end of the ribbon through the second hole, and clip off the ends.
  4. Stamp the anchor image on the flap of the envelope, and insert the invitation.
