Princess Cupcakes

Making Dolls in Dresses out of Frosting

Sep 17, 2009 April Black

Making cupcakes look like princesses out of frosting is easier than one might think but it requires a lot of icing.

Each cupcake is meant to look like a princess, but without the crown it will be a girl in a dress and can be used in several situations.

Ingredients Needed

  • Cake mix plus ingredients
  • Cupcake cups
  • Buttercream icing
  • Food coloring
  • Small sphere shaped suckers
  • Decorative tips – writing tip and basket weave tip
  • Edible marker (optional)
  • Tube of yellow squeezable icing

Making Princess Cupcakes

  1. Make cupcakes and allow them to cool completely
  2. Make buttercream icing. There are several recipes online. One can be found on Wilton's Website.
  3. Separate the icing into different containers. Tint one portion a hair color and the other containers will be the dress colors. Have fun mixing the food coloring to create unique colors. Many of the multipack food coloring boxes have charts on the back that give directions on how many drops of each color to use to create a new color.
  4. To make the dress, use the basket weave icing tip. Start around the edge of the cupcake and spiral inward toward the center. Once the surface of the cupcake is frosted start on the next layer. This layer will not begin at the edge of the cupcake but move in one spiral before you begin. Continue creating layers with each one smaller until there are three or four layers.
  5. To make the bodice of the dress, find the center of the skirt and make a line with the basket weave tip about ¾ of an inch long. Without stopping the flow of icing, fold it back and make another line on top. Do this three or four times and then make a small ball on the side to end the flow of icing. Make another ball on the other side of the bodice for the sleeves.
  6. Unwrap the sucker and stick it in the center of the icing. Hopefully the sucker will rest on top of the bodice.
  7. With the writing tip, put icing on the sucker to resemble hair.
  8. Take the yellow frosting in the tube and draw a semicircle on top of the head and create a small mound in the middle for the crown. Most of the tube frosting allow a tip to be attached and for this the writing tip works well.
  9. Use the edible marker to draw a face on the sucker or use the buttercream icing and pipe two dots for eyes and a semicircle for a mouth.

Princess cupcakes are extra sweet and a little mess, but they are a huge hit with kids, just make sure there are extra napkins on hand.

The cupcakes are great for birthday parties and go well with a castle cake for larger parties.
