Swap party games for party activities with this simple idea that isn't competitive and gives everyone a chance to express the designer in them.

Here are several ideas for party activities for kids who enjoy art projects.

Moon Paper

This can get a bit messy so consider doing it outside or at least on the kitchen sink.

Gather together

  • some poster paint in different colours
  • washing up liquid
  • several shallow wide bowls or deep trays
  • plastic drinking straws
  • sheets of paper

Half fill the bowls and trays with water. Mix the water with a little squirt of washing up liquid and a good squirt of poster paint (a different colour for each tray). Add enough water so that the level is almost to the brim.

Then comes the fun part. Using the straw, blow into the mixture until there is a layer of bubbles on top. Make sure not to breath in the paint/washing up liquid mixture.

Very gently lay a piece of paper on the top of the bubbles without disturbing them too much. Carefully lift the paper off and marvel at all the Moon craters.

Designers may like to dip their paper into some or all of the colours, rather than just one, to get a layered effect. Also consider using different coloured paper in lighter pastels shades. Perhaps even try using black paper with white or yellow paint.

Slug and Snail Paper

Gather together

  • a tray
  • some cling film
  • paper
  • a marble
  • green poster paint
  • some string

Cover the tray with cling film to protect it and then lay down a sheet of white paper on the tray.

Squirt a little paint onto a seperate piece of cling film and then roll the marble around in the paint until it is covered. Tip the marble onto the sheet of paper and tip the tray around so that the marble rolls around all over the paper. Reload the marble with paint as needed.

For a different effect try spraying the paper with a mist of water. The paint will bleed into the moisture creating a fuzzy trail.

For a different effect again, drag a small length of string through the paint until it is coated and then drag it across the paper.

Hang all the sheets of paper out to dry. If they curl a little, put them under a heavy weight eg some large books, to flatten them again.

The designer can then use the paper as a background for further artwork. Perhaps a simple drawing of aliens or space ships on their Moon Crater paper, or insects on the Slug and Snail paper. Perhaps rather than a drawing, artists could use a variety of paper and other craft supplies to create their spaceships, aliens or insects.
