How to Play Picture Bingo at a Children's Party

Sep 13, 2009 Lesley Munnichs

An indoor party game idea for a rainy day.

This is a simple but great idea if the party games that had been planned for outside are not able to go ahead because of inclement weather.

Instead of drawing numbers from a barrel and marking them off the play card, players have to look out the window to find the items to mark off their card.

It is most suited to younger children rather than teenagers.

There is some preparation required before hand. Gather together

  • an A4 sheet of paper for each player
  • magazines
  • scissors
  • glue
  • ruler
  • pen

Begin by cutting out pictures from magazines of the things that players are likely to see from the window. Depending on the view from the window (busy street or quiet village), the time of year (summer or winter) and whether the window faces out into the back garden or front garden some of the following could be included:

  • garden tools
  • types of flowers or trees
  • a likeness of the family pet
  • cars or motorbikes
  • types of trucks eg a delivery van, and icecream truck
  • garden statues
  • lawnmower
  • a dovecote or bird bath
  • a fountain or garden water feature
  • trellis or other garden structure
  • someone riding a bike or walking a dog.
  • even types of front gates.

Also consider moving items into view for the children to spot eg

  • an umbrella
  • wellies or outdoor rubber boots
  • a raincoat
  • an outdoor chair

Eight pictures are needed for each player.

Rule each piece of paper into eight squares. Glue a picture into each of the squares. To clarify exactly what each player has to find while looking out of the window, write the name of the item under the picture. Cars are a good example. It isn't necessary to match the make and model of the vehicle. If there is a picture of a blue Ford, simply write underneath "blue car" .

Put the play cards face down in a pile and let each player choose their own.

The game can be played for a certain length of time, say, half an hour and players rewarded with a luck-dip style prize for each picture they find in the view from the window. Alternatively, the game can continue until on until a player has found all eight pictures.

Either way players are tucked up safe and dry inside while finding the objects outside.

If for some reason the view from the window is not suitable or there is insufficient room for all the children to see clearly, the same game can be played using a 'view' inside. Rather than children having to find objects outside they find them inside instead.

Using the same method cut out items from magazines that are in the kitchen. These could include kitchen appliances:

  • utensils
  • a fruit bowl
  • tea towels
  • dish cloth
  • dish rack
  • clock
  • coffee machine
  • bread basket
  • fridge magnets

Because this version is inside, children can walk around the kitchen (without touching anything of course) to find the objects on their card.
