Horse Themed Birthday Party
An Equestrian Celebration for Girls and Boys
Ideas for horse-themed invitations, food, games and a personalized cowboy or cowgirl cake.
A birthday party featuring a horse theme is perfect for a pony-crazy kid. Use the ideas below to plan the perfect equestrian celebration.
Invitations
Magnetic Horse Frame Invitation
- Purchase magnetic four inch by six inch plastic frames at an arts and crafts store.
- Use horse stickers to decorate the edges of the frame.
- Type the party details, using a word processing computer program, on colored paper.
- Print out multiple copies, cut into four inch by six inch rectangles and slide into the frames. Include extra postage on the envelope before mailing to the guests.
Horseshoe Postcard Invitation
- Cut a horseshoe shape out of a brand new kitchen sponge.
- Fill a shallow saucer with washable paint and have the birthday child stamp a horseshoe onto a piece of four inch by six inch cardstock.
- On the back of the cardstock write the party details on the left hand side of the cardstock and the name and address of the guest on the right.
Decorations
Birthday Corral Sign
- Paint a large sign saying, “Birthday Corral” using tempera paint on butcher block paper.
- Display outside at the party as the guests arrive by hanging it from a fence or large tree.
Cowboy Riding Boot Centerpieces
- Buy large inexpensive cowboy boots.
- Fill the boots with candy and place one in the center of every table.
- Count the number of candies in each boot before the party.
- During the celebration have the children guess how many candies are in the boot at their table and give the boot to the child who has the closest guess.
Hay Bale Picnic Tables
- Make tables by placing four bales of hay together and then covering them with a horse blanket.
- Set the cowboy boot in the center and have the guests sit on the ground around the bales.
Food
Horse Shaped Pizza
- Order uncut extra large pizzas from the local pizzeria.
- Take a horse cookie cutter and cut out horse shaped pieces of pizza.
Personalized Cowboy/Cowgirl Cake
- Before the party take a picture of the birthday child in a cowboy hat and cowboy boots.
- Take the picture to your local grocery store and have them reproduce it onto a sheet cake to serve at the party.
Games/Activities
Decorate Handkerchiefs
- As each kid arrives at the birthday corral hand them a cowboy hat and handkerchief. Have them put on the cowboy hat and decorate the handkerchief with fabric pens and stamps.
Country Karaoke
- Download a mix of country songs onto an MP3 player. Print out the words to each song and staple them together to form a packet.
- During the party hook the MP3 player up to speakers and attach a microphone. Have the guests take turns singing along to the songs using the packet.
Pony Rides
- Call your local horse farm and ask them to bring a child-friendly horse to the party. Have a trained adult take the kids for a walk on the horse up and down the driveway or around the backyard.
- Take a picture of each child on the horse. Send the pictures to the guests in their thank you cards. They can place the picture in the frame sent with the invitation.
Horseshoes
- Buy a set of plastic or rubber horseshoes. Set up makeshift horseshoe pits and have the kids take turns playing.
- Encourage fun by having them yell, “Giddy-up!” every time a point is scored.
