Here's how to have a fun birthday hoe-down for little cowboys and cowgirls, complete with ideas for farm themed grub, games, favors and decorations.

Get ready for a barnyard birthday bash that little buckaroos will truly enjoy. From pony rides to a cake shaped like a pig, here are some of the best ideas for a farm themed birthday party.

Farm Themed Invitations

There are many varieties of birthday invitations that fit with the farm theme. Invitations featuring farm animals, barnyard scenes, cowboys and cowgirls, or even a tractor are appropriate choices.

One invitation style by Zabella Designs has a barn that opens revealing farm animals inside and has raffia tied to the top. Others have cowhide borders, ponies, pigs and chickens. There are so many cute ones to choose from, including one from Evite that can be found under Farm Animal Birthday, for those who prefer cyber-invitations.

On the invitation, ask party guests to come dressed western style. Having guests wear cowboy hats, red bandannas, overalls or blue jeans helps add to the festivitie atmosphere.

Barnyard Birthday Activities

The activities for a farm themed party will depend on the location and available resources. For those who live on a farm, or have access to one for their party venue, a number of activities can be attainable.

  • Hay Ride - Hook up a tractor to a flatbed trailer, place bales of hay in a row along the edges of the trailer, and scatter loose hay on the floorboard. Have an experienced tractor driver map out a route avoiding excess bumps and holes. Have party guests sit on the hay bales, and make sure that young children are accompanied by adults.

  • Farm Feed - Take party guests on a tour of the farm and have them feed the animals. Younger guests will love scattering chicken feed, and watching the hens and roosters eat. Feeding cows or horses is another activity, be sure to have loose alfalfa for guests to grab in handfuls.

  • Pony Rides - This ever popular birthday activity is especially good for younger children. Some local birthday party companies offer pony ride services that will come directly to party venues. Make sure and have a photographer or camera available to take pictures of each party guest on the pony.

  • Pin the Tail on the Donkey - This classic party game fits well with the farm theme.

  • Farm Animal Crafts - Many party websites offer farm themed crafts in bulk amounts. Some of these crafts include decorating balloons like a farm animal using stickers, and making farm animals by gluing together foam pieces in the shape of a cow, chicken or pig.

These are a few of the best activities for a barnyard party. For those who don't have access to a farm, turning the party venue into a farm-like scene for guests to play in is another option.

Farm Party Decorations

To turn any room into a farm themed place to party, scatter raffia all over the floor, paint a cardboard refrigerator box to look like a red barn and place stuffed farm animals on the ground. Add a kid sized table with a red checkered tablecloth, and a white picket fence also crafted from cardboard, and young guests will be delighted.

  • Place hay bales all around the perimeter of the party. Hay bales are not only good for decoration, but also make for great outdoor seating.

  • Place red and white checkered tablecloths on the party tables with glass milk bottles full of sunflowers as centerpieces on each table.

  • Place black and white cowhide printed balloons throughout the party site.

Turn one of the decorations here into an extra party activity for young children. Play the game Who Left the Barn Open by taking the stuffed farm animals and hiding them outside or in another room. Once the party guests round up the animals, place them back in their original area and use for decoration.

Cowboy Grub & Piggy Cake

The food for a farm party can have a truly authentic presentation. Serve condiments like ketchup, mustard and ranch dressing in mini galvanized buckets, place a basket full of fresh apples out on the table and make a vegetable tray in a wooden crate.

Some good main course menu choices for a farm themed party include pigs-in-a-blanket, pulled pork sandwiches with coleslaw or barbecued ribs. Accompany the main dish with vegetables like baby carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and grape tomatoes placed in rows in a wooden crate along with a small galvanized bucket filled with ranch dressing.

Serve fresh lemonade to drink, and top it all off with piggy cupcakes or a cake shaped like a pig. Cakes can be carved into the shape of the birthday child's favorite farm animal.

More Barnyard Fun

Send guests home with small buckets of plastic farm animals, red bandannas or cowboy hats. Such a good time will be had that they will all be asking for a farm party for their next birthday.
