A fairy tale theme is perfect for birthday parties that include both genders. There are many fun birthday activities and decorations that can make the day special.

If you are looking for a birthday party that involves dressing up, slaying dragons and a bit of magic, then a fairy tale theme is the perfect choice. A fairy tale birthday party is the perfect way to give your daughter that princess party she wanted while including both boys and girls, since boys can dress as brave knights, handsome princes, evil villains, or dragons.

Decorating the Room

To create a fun and entertaining fairy tale birthday party, you will need to go all out on decorations. Luckily, going all out doesn't have to cost a lot of money. Here are some tips for turning a room into a fairy tale bower without causing undue stress to your credit card:

  • Use a die cut machine or good old fashioned scissors to make cut outs related to the party theme. Flowers, stars, swords and dragons are all a good choice. You can decorate them with glitter yourself or give them to the party guests to decorate. Hang the cut outs from the ceiling on ribbon swags or tape them to windows.
  • Use plenty of tulle to create swags for tables, doorways and windows. Tulle is cheap and just seems fairy tale like.
  • Buy a dragon pinata and make it the room's focal point. At the end of the day, the party guests can "slay" the dragon with a wooden sword.
  • Tape newsprint to a wall and let the kids paint a castle on it.
  • Draw a knight's charger on a piece of poster board. This can double as a pin the tail on the charger game later on.

Fairy Tale Birthday Activities

Activities for a birthday party with a fairy tale theme are easy to find. The hard part is deciding which ones to use. Besides pinning the tail on the charger and slaying the dragon pinata, kids will enjoy some of these ideas:

  • Recreate the tale of the princess and the pea by placing a small round object on a chair draped in glittery fabrics. The children will have to sit on the chair to see if they feel the "pea" under the fabric.
  • Make a magic wand topper using star cut outs, glitter, a pencil and a few pieces of ribbon. These wands are useful and magical.
  • Hold a jousting tournament using foam flotation noodles as weapons and stick horses as noble steeds.
  • Decorate sugar cookies cut into star shapes with colored sugar.

Finally, don't forget the entertainment. Jugglers or storytellers are ideal choices, since both were present during the festivities in the Middle Ages.
