Having a Dora the Explorer birthday party can be lots of fun for young children. Here are some of the best ideas and activities to make the fiesta a great success.

Ever heard of a tres leches cake? How about booking a taco truck to cater the party? The Dora the Explorer birthday theme is a favorite with young children, and with a little imagination it can be done less generically than just using plates and napkins depicting the character. Here are some fabulous ideas and activities for giving the best Dora the Explorer birthday party ever.

Invitations

The Dora the Explorer party theme is such a popular one, that there are many invitation styles available to choose from. Free printable downloads of Dora the Explorer birthday invitations are the least expensive choice.

There are some really cute custom printed Dora the Explorer birthday invitations featured in a variety of bright colors and styles. These invitations can be personalized, and also include a photo of the birthday child in a Dora the Explorer scene of their choice.

Another invitation option is to go with a colorful fiesta style invitation. There are several choices available that would fit with the Dora the Explorer theme. One in particular is especially appropriate, a brightly colored donkey pinata invitation complete with fun, googly eyes.

A generic, write-in Dora the Explorer invitation is also available in stores and on many websites. They are sold in packages of eight, for around four dollars.

Fun Party Activities

There are many fun party activities to do at a Dora the Explorer birthday fiesta. From simple to elaborate, here's a few ideas to choose from.

  • Pinata - One of the simplest, and most fitting activities is a colorful pinata. Party guests take turns hitting the pinata, until it breaks, and then fill their goody bags with candy and small toys.

  • Pin The Tail On The Donkey - This is another easy game that kids can play. Hang the donkey poster at a level party guests can reach, blindfold each guest when it is their turn and give them a tail to place on the donkey. Whichever guest is closest to pinning the tail on the donkey is the winner.

  • Dora's Obstacle Course Adventure - This activity begins by showing the party guests a pre-drawn map of the given obstacle course. An example of this is, "First, we have to go through Lollipop Forest, then burrow through Tico's Tree Tunnel, and go across Crocodile Lake, to get to Birthday Mountain." The course can be modified to fit whatever items are available for the activity.

In the obstacle course activity, place tall, colorful lollipops so that they are sticking out of the grass and have the party guests weave through them. The lollipops should lead to a tunnel which could be a children's pre-fabricated play tunnel or simply a sheet draped over some chairs for the children to go underneath.

For the next part of the activity, crossing the lake, just draw some squares with sidewalk chalk on the driveway and have the children hop from one square to another. The end of the activity should lead the party guests to birthday mountain, which should be wherever the birthday cake is going to be served.

Fiesta Food & Cake

A great idea for food, that takes all the work out of the food preparation for the fiesta, is to have a taco truck cater the party. Many cities have mobile Mexican food available, and will cater pre-arranged events. Guests will think this is a fun and clever idea, and it will be something that will make the party memorable.

If taco trucks are not available to cater, serve tortilla chips with salsa and guacamole for an appetizer, accompanied by a main meal of quesadillas, chicken flautas and mini empanadas. For drinks, have a variety of Mexican sodas, like Jarritos or Jumex, on hand for guests to enjoy.

Just about any grocery store bakery can make a cake with Dora the Explorer on it. For something more authentic, try a tres leches cake, a moist, delicious Mexican treat available at many Mexican bakeries.

Festive Decorations

Decorations for a Dora the Explorer party should be bright and colorful. Bright yellow, hot pink, and orange are good color choices and go well with the Dora the Explorer party plates and accessories.

  • Place a bright yellow tablecloth on each of the party tables, and top with vases of big bright paper flowers in a variety of colors.
  • Place balloon bouquets of hot pink, orange, and yellow balloons throughout the party area.
  • Place Dora the Explorer party hats and blowers at each place setting.
  • Twist and hang hot pink, orange and yellow crepe paper from the ceiling.

More Fiesta Fun

To add to the fiesta fun, play a CD of tunes featuring songs from Dora the Explorer, or play Spanish guitar music in the background. If possible, hire a mariachi band to play, and make it a party to remember.
