Got a budding artist with a birthday? Make art the theme of your party, with invitations, food, fun and games to match.
Let color and creativity take over your child's next birthday, with an art theme party for kids.
Children of all ages will enjoy an arts and crafts birthday bash. You supply the ideas and supplies and let their imaginations do the rest!
Use your own artistic imagination in planning the party. If you plan to use paints or messy supplies, consider having the party outdoors.
Here are some birthday party ideas for a memorable art themed celebration.
Invitations
Make invitations that look like a painter’s palette or a frame on an easel.
Got Photoshop? Superimpose your child’s face on the Mona Lisa, The Scream or another recognizable work of art for the cover of your invitation.
Party activities
As the children arrive at the party, hand them sidewalk chalk and let them decorate a square of the walkway to your house, or a pre-drawn square on the driveway, creating a colorful party path.
Tack up butcher paper or newsprint end roll paper (available at many newspaper production facilities for a few dollars). Pour tempera paints in Dixie cups and pass out paintbrushes. Have the party guests paint a mural together. When finished, the mural will be a beautiful backdrop to the photos of the birthday child blowing out the candles on the cake.
Give each child a plain white painter's cap and have him decorate it with fabric paints, brushes, stencils and decorative sponges.
With older children, you may want to make time for a more complicated project, such as paper mache or Sculpey sculptures.
Play the board game Masterpiece.
Have a guessing game to match up famous works of art with the creator.
Take a photo of each party guest wearing an artist’s smock and a beret, holding a palette and a brush, posed in front of a painting on an easel. To add to the fun, cut a hole in the “painting” and have the birthday child stand behind the easel and put his face through the hole. Give each child their photo after the party.
At the end of the party, have an "art show." Display the children's art works and when the parents come to pick up their children, welcome them to your art show. Give them a glass of grape juice, play classical music and let them meet the artists!
No "starving artists" at this party
Give each child a cupcake frosted in plain, white icing. Let them decorate their own cupcake with brightly colored frostings, using toothpicks and small paintbrushes.
Make a cake that looks like a painting, creating a frame around the edges. If you have a small number of guests, let them decorate inside the frame before cutting the cake.
Make a cake that looks like an artist’s palette or a big crayon.
For snacks, think color! Find chips, marshmallows and crackers that come in multi colors. Check out speciality candy shops for candy that looks like crayons, paint cans and other artist supplies.
Favors
Decorate extra-large t-shirts with first names on the back and give one to each party guest. If you’re doing a messy art project, hand out the shirts at the start of the party, to protect their clothing.
Goody bags can be filled with Play-doh or modeling clay, markers, crayons, watercolors and other art supplies.
