Outer-space inspired invitation, game, cake, decoration and food ideas for planning a far-out children's party.

Allow your future astronaut to have a birthday party that’s “outta this world!” Use the ideas below to plan an outer-space party for your child’s next birthday.

Outer-space Themed Astronaut Invitations

Create your own outer-space invitations with supplies found at your local craft store. Buy black paper, space stickers and colored gel pens. Cut the paper to size and use the gel pens to write, “You’re Invited to a Party That’s Out of This World!” Underneath, write the details of the party such as date, time and place with the gel pens. Have the birthday boy decorate the invitations with the space stickers.

How To Make a Spaceship Themed Cake

Use a box cake mix to bake a 9" x 13" inch sheet cake and allow it to fully cool. Cover the entire cake in white frosting. Use a black or purple icing pen to draw the outline of a spaceship on the cake. Add a few drops of blue food coloring to white frosting to create a light blue color.

Use the light blue frosting to fill in the space ship. Draw stars and planets around the spaceship with colored icing pens. Write, “Happy Birthday!” on the body of the space ship and use the icing pens to add details such as windows and flames to the ship.

Outer-space Themed Birthday Party Decorations

To give the party room the feel of the Milky Way, use black light bulbs in all of the lamps and light fixtures. Use laundry detergent to paint stars, planets and meteoroids onto the walls of the room. (Everything with the laundry detergent on it will glow.) In the middle of the room, hang a planet piñata. Make the piñata yourself by use paper mache and paint to create Mars, Jupiter or whichever planet the birthday boy chooses.

Outer-space Themed Birthday Party Food

Have the guests get into the spirit of the party by building their own alien burgers. Set out toppings and demonstrate how to use them to make silly aliens. Use pickles and olives to make eyes on the top of the bun, cheese slices to make tongues sticking out of the buns and potato sticks to make antennae.

Outer-space Astronaut Themed Birthdat Party Activities

  • Play Musical Planets by taping planet pictures and names to the back of chairs set up back to back. Have the children walk around the chairs while you play the theme to Star Wars. When the music stops, the kids all take a seat. Whoever doesn’t have a seat is out and another chair is removed. Continue until there is only one person left.
  • Make astronaut helmets with cardboard boxes. Before the party, collect enough boxes for each of the attendees. Cut off one side and tape the other sides shut. Use a knife to cut out an eye shield. Cover the hole with colored plastic wrap taped to the inside of the helmet. At the party, the kids can paint and decorate the helmets.
