Cake, invitation, decoration, food and activity ideas for throwing a winter ice skating party.

Host an ice skating party and celebrate your ice skater’s birthday with a fete suited for an ice prince or princess. Use the following easy and inexpensive ideas to skate right through your party preparations.

The Cake

Choose your child’s favorite cake mix and bake a sheet cake according to the directions. After the cake has cooled cover it and stick it in the freezer overnight so it is easier to work with. The next day use a knife to cut out a large boot shape from the sheet cake. Ice the cake with frosting dyed your child’s favorite color. Melt white chocolate in the microwave and dip large pretzel rods in the chocolate so they are completely covered. While you are waiting for the chocolate to harden use licorice whips to form skate laces on the cake. Then use the chocolate-covered pretzel logs to create blades on the bottom of the boot. Break the pretzels into smaller pieces if necessary and use melted chocolate as glue to bind pieces together.

The Invitation

Purchase an ice skate stamp and a silver stamp pad. Use a word processing program to type up the details of the party. Print the invitation on white or black card stock and decorate the invite with the ice skate stamp. Take white or silver paper and punch out holes to create artificial snow. Place a handful of hole-punched snow inside the card before sealing the envelope.

The Location

The easiest place to host an ice skating party is at a local skating rink or pond. If that is impractical or out of your budget, create an ice rink in your home. Clear out a large space in your house such as a family room, a garage or a basement and mark off a rink on the floor with colored masking tape.

The Decorations

If the party is at a rink use crepe paper and balloons to make the area more festive. Use a large poster board to make a “Happy Birthday!” sign and tape it to the side of the rink. For an indoor party at home use large pieces of butcher block paper to create the features of an ice rink. On one piece of paper paint a “Skate Rentals” sign with shelves of skates underneath it. On another write “Warming Area” and place chairs or pillow in front of the sign to form a seating area. Tape a sign reading, “Refreshments”, behind a small table with filled with hot chocolate and hot cider. Then at the party play your birthday kid’s favorite music and encourage the party-goers to ice dance around the rink.

Everyone will have lots of fun this winter laughing and skating at an ice skating birthday party!
