Easy, inexpensive ideas for airplane themed birthday invitations, decorations, cake, food, favors and games and activities.

Kids love airplanes. Here's how to hold an airplane-theme birthday party:

Invitations

Buy colored computer printer paper at any retail store. Type up the party details using a word processing program and print the invites out on the colored paper. Fold the paper into a paper airplane and place in a 9½-inch envelope.

Decorations

Turn the party area into an airport. Designate a place for the presents and the favors. Label the present area, “Arrivals” and favor area, “Departures.” Hang paper airplanes from the ceiling and dress the birthday boy up as a pilot. Use light blue crepe paper to hang white clouds from the ceiling throughout the paper airplanes. Cluster groups of blue and white balloons tied to a toy airplane around the party area.

Cake

Use your favorite cake recipe to bake a 9-inch by 13-inch sheet cake. Allow the cake to cool and then place it in the freezer for a couple hours to chill completely. Use food coloring to dye homemade or store bought frosting light blue. Frost the tops and sides of the cake light blue. Take white icing and draw white clouds on the cake. Fill in the clouds with the white icing. Place small toy airplanes on the cake so that it looks like they are flying through the sky. Write, “Happy Birthday!” in the clouds using dark blue icing.

Food

Serve traditional airplane snacks to the party guests. Buy mini-bags of pretzels and peanuts and small bottles of water or juice to have displayed on tables for the kids to enjoy while they are playing the party games. For lunch or dinner make sandwiches and cut up carrots and celery. Purchase disposable plastic trays and serve the sandwiches and vegetables with dip to the children. Add to the fun by having the adults dress and act as flight attendants while serving the food.

Favors

Fill white paper sandwich bags, “barf bags”, with small toys and treats. Fold the top of the bags over and staple them. Write “TNX” across the top of the bags in black marker as an airport-themed abbreviation for thanks.

Games/Activities

As the party goers arrive direct them to a table filled with blank paper airplanes. Encourage them to decorate and personalize an airplane using craft supplies that have been set in child safe bowls on the table.

When everyone has arrived and decorated a plane, invite them to try and fly their airplane through a large ring made of poster board hanging from the ceiling. For a large party have more than one ring available so more people can try at once.

After everyone has eaten, line them up and have them take turns pinning the prop on the plane. Blindfold and spin around older guests for more of a challenge.
